As the name suggests “The Other Side” it is different and can be interpreted several ways. It has a surreal and eerie presence. The seemingly untouched floor of fallen leaves creates a carpet for the man-made forest that stands above. The coldness of this image is intentional as I wanted to create a mysterious look that would leave the viewer wondering where in the world this exists.
In large format this piece brings the viewer to a striking and strange place that appears unnatural yet completely organic. You can’t help but wonder what might be lurking behind the trees or just out of view. I find that this piece captures attention and causes the viewer to stay captivated by the mysteriousness.
This image was created for limited production as a large format 2.1 meter (7 foot) wide art piece but can be produced in smaller custom sizes as well.
Behind the scenes…
I envisioned this piece around the same time as The Forest and spent a similar amount of time searching for and experimenting with locations, lighting and angles. Over the course of two autumns I shot many locations prior to finally discovering this particular place in Beijing, China. This type of man-made forest is common in Beijing but somehow I knew this was the right one when I found it.
I shot this location on four consecutive days until I was happy with the images captured. The early sunset in the late autumn combined with the haze of Beijing provided suitable light to achieve the look I was after. For this image HDR processing was used to help with the illumination from front to back rather than increasing the colour range.
